You've Already Made The Choice
The classic Matrix conversation between Neo and the Oracle, "Because you didn't come here to make the choice. You've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it."
We all make choices, most times, they're subconscious, rules and beliefs we've made long ago that govern our lives but the big emotional decisions that go against the rules, those decisions are made conscious but at the same time, we still might not understand why.
It's not until we start walking out the choice that we made, the pressure comes, the challenges, the moments where we start to doubt and second guess the choice we made, that we truly understand why we made it in the first place.
Two Statements That Shaped My Choice
Two moments in my life pushed me down a specific path.
A Conversation With My Grandfather
Growing up, my mother's father owned a business. He spent most of his life working for someone but then one day, he and my grandmother decided no more and they launched their own business.
Years later when I started going on jobs with him, he said one phrase that I carried for nearly 3 decades,
You'll never be happy working for someone else.Grandfather
Maybe he saw something in me that I didn't see in myself, maybe he was just projecting his own beliefs on me but the fact was it stuck and I never could find myself comfortable in a 9-5 where the majority of the time I had to follow someone else's rules and choices.
Yes, when working with clients, if they want to do something a certain way, I'm not going to debate them and get upset, I'll do the work, but owning your business, what you do with that brand, that's all up to you and it gives me the freedom to be creative and experiment with things I wouldn't normally be able to because let's face it, there are very few brands out there that want to be pioneers, most want to take the least risky option and do what others have proven works and that's just not enough for me.
The Movie What Women Want
The second moment in my life happened years after the conversation with my grandfather, it was December of 2000, when I watched the movie, "What Women Want" with Mel Gibson which helped me choose what business I wanted to create.
For those who haven't seen the movie, the plot goes a little something like this. Mel's character works for a big advertising agency that mainly advertises to men, and he's great at it! But then the agency shifts and wants to advertise towards women and while he's good at getting with women, he's not good at understanding them.
One night, the new marketing director gives everyone a box of women's products and he decides to use them all (a decision made with a little liquid courage). While doing so, he slips and falls in the bathtub while holding a hair dryer and gets electrocuted and the next day when he wakes up, he can hear what women are thinking.
He then goes on to use this new power to manipulate the new marketing director, a woman, and steals her ideas to land a new big client. You'll have to watch the movie to find out what happens, no spoiler alerts here.
Now I don't agree with stealing people's ideas, but growing up a tad bit on the introverted side, I didn't understand what most people wanted, let alone women. But the idea that this guy could use advertising to connect with people and help them, was something that just clicked and from that moment forward, I always told myself, "I either want to work for a marketing agency or own one."
And while I did work for a handful of different agencies, it was my grandfather's voice, "You'll never be happy working for someone else," that kept pushing me to own my own thing, and 24 years later, that became a reality.
I'm excited to share what came next, follow along to learn how I went from 0 to 1.

I've always been goal-oriented. I grew up on Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, and Darren Hardy who all seem to share the same philosophy, those people with goals are usually happier than those who are merely just drifting through life.
