When You First Start, Start Here

When you first start, understanding what content to create can often be a struggle as there are so many different directions you could go.

Instead of guessing what you think people want to learn, what you should do is look at the content that best performs for your competition and make a better version of this.

How Burger King Determines Location

One company that does this really well is Burger King. They understood that one of McDonald's proudest processes was how they went about finding a location to open a new store.

McDonald's is a highly successful franchise with over 40,275 locations worldwide and looking to open another 1,900 in 2023. To ensure optimal location selection, McDonald's has a comprehensive guide spanning thousands of pages, which is fully programmed.

The decision-making process includes utilizing demographic databases, population statistics-based marketing research, and competitive analysis within a radius of five to seven miles.

This thorough analysis guarantees that the chosen location is infallible and will successfully target consumers.

What does Burger King do with this information, build a store right across the street.

When you first start, look at what your competition does well, and in a way mimic what they do but add your own tone of voice and try to do it better.

Skyscraper Technique

Skyscraper Technique

This idea of recreating high-performing content was also coined the Skyscraper Technique by Brian Dean at Backlinko. This technique mimics what you often see in bigger cities where investing groups and business owners compete to see who can have the largest building in the city.

The idea is to take what already exists and make it better or bigger and then share it with the world.
